Royal Mail plans to significantly reduce the amount of mail that is delivered by bicycle. At the moment, bikes are used on a quarter of the 65,000 mail delivery routes. A consultation with staff about this plan is due to end in the next few days. The expected outcome is the phasing out of bicycles and the greater use of ‘car derived vans’ in pilot areas such as Cambridge, Plymouth, Durham and Lincoln. Posties’ bikes will disappear from the rest of the UK quickly afterwards, unless we make a stand. Mail has been delivered by bicycle since 1880. As Waitrose, the Police and paramedics switch to bicycles for delivery of services, the Royal Mail’s plans are madness.
